The Cleansing-Moisturising-Toning procedure is standard for a healthy skincare regimen, however various skin types have varied requirements. Choosing the correct products for your it, whether dry, oily, sensitive, or mixed, can help keep skin issues at bay. While some people have oily skin and need a water-based moisturizer, others with sensitive skin may need a lotion that helps them avoid acne. So, the bottom line is to understand how to identify your it!

What exactly do we mean by “skin type”?

Skin type is determined by the skin’s intrinsic qualities and how it responds to various environments. “These parameters encompass hydration, oil production, sensitivity, and texture. Understanding your it  is essential for choosing the right skincare products and therapies to keep it healthy,” says dermatologist Priyanka Kuri.

Several things can affect your skin. These include your age, frequent sun exposure, other environmental variables, illnesses, hormonal changes, food, and medicines. A study published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology categorizes skin into various skin-type classifications based on sensitivity, hydration, oiliness, elasticity, and skin tone, as well as five corresponding subcategories such as erythema, roughness, pores, wrinkles, and pigmentation.

What are the different varieties of skin?

The most prevalent  are normal, oily, dry, combination, and sensitive.

1. Normal skin.

Normal skin is balanced. It’s neither excessively greasy nor dry. If you have normal skin, you will see fewer flaws and a healthier complexion.

2. Oily Skin

Excessive sebum and oil production on the skin typically results in a glossy look. With this , you are more prone to have acne and enlarged pores.

3. Dry Skin

Dry skin lacks moisture, causing it to seem rough or scaly. In addition, it might be sensitive at times.

4. Combination Skin

Combination skin has both oily and patchy skin, particularly in the T-Zone, which is the forehead-nose-chin area. It is more oily than any other place, and your cheeks seem dry all the time.

5. Sensitive Skin

This one is constantly prone to responses such as redness, itching, or burning, which occur most commonly when particular items are used in conjunction with other elements in your environment.

How do you classify skin types?

There are several techniques to determine what type of skin you have. According to a research published in Cosmetics, the Fitzpatrick Skin Phototype categorization and the Baumann its System are common tools for it’s categorization.

The Fitzpatrick Skin Phototype Classification technique assesses skin based on its reaction to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). The approach classifies types into six groups. It establishes a scale ranging from ‘I’, which has extremely pale skin that always burns and never tans, to ‘VI’, which has deeply pigmented dark brown or black skin that never burns and always tans. The categorization is based on the quantity of melanin pigment in the skin and how it responds to sun exposure. This approach involves asking a series of questions concerning the color of the eyes and hair, the skin color, freckles, and the sensitivity to sun exposure.

The Baumann Skin Type System is a division system that includes 16 different skin kinds. These are identified using the Baumann Skin Type Indicator (BSTI), a scientifically verified questionnaire. According to a research published in Dermatologic Clinics, the approach is based on four major skin characteristics: dry vs oily, sensitive versus resistant, pigmented uneven skin tone versus non-pigmented even-toned, and wrinkle-prone versus tight non-wrinkle prone.

How to Identify Your Skin Type at Home

It is fairly easy to determine your skin type at home. You may use the same approach.

Sensitive skin care

  • Begin by cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser and patting dry.
  • Leave it for an hour to enable the skin to return to its natural state; do not use any creams.
  • You can determine the texture of your skin by studying it. You can check for oiliness, dryness, and sensitivity. “You can as well
  • use blotting paper in different facial areas to see how much oil is being absorbed; that can show if you are oily skinned,” Dr. Kuri advises. These observations and tests help to determine the category of skin type.

Moisturizing

1. Oily skin.

If you have oily skin, try non-comedogenic and oil-free skincare products. Cleanse your face twice a day to eliminate extra oils and prevent blocked pores. “Use light exfoliants once a week to exfoliate dead skin cells that may cause acne. Dr Kuri recommends light-weight moisturizers based on water to keep hydration at bay without creating more oils.

2. Dry skin.

After cleaning, moisturize your dry skin with a heavy-duty moisturizing moisturizer. Avoid alcohol, scent, and harsh chemical-based cosmetics that remove natural oils from your skin. “When looking for hydrating cleaners, choose mild ones over those with a lot of foam. Dr Kuri recommends drinking plenty of water and installing an air humidifier in your room.

3. Combination Skin.

You must maintain a balanced regimen if you have combination skin. Use various products on different parts of your face as needed. “You can use oil-absorbing products on the T-zone and hydrating products on dry areas,” Dr. Kuri advises. Choose a mild cleanser appropriate for all skin types. To balance hydration, use a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser. Also, use spot treatments to oily regions and rich creams to dry parts.

4. Sensitive Skin

Before using new products, always do a patch test to ensure that no adverse reactions occur. Avoid items containing scent, alcohol, and harsh chemicals. “Choose cosmetics made particularly for sensitive skin. Dr Kuri advises keeping your skincare regimen to a minimum to decrease the chance of discomfort.
